Chelmsford Animal Hospital to show its new quarters

CHELMSFORD -- When a quartet of veterinary professionals bought the Chelmsford Animal Hospital four years ago, the building covered 1,100 square feet and had one examination room.
Today, it's nearly four times the size -- at 5,000 square feet -- and has four exam rooms and a consultation room.
The brand-new veterinary hospital, at 11 Fletcher St., will be the site of an open house Saturday from 2 to 5 p.m.
"We're going to open it up and show everybody what's behind the curtain," said Fred Ramseyer, who owns the hospital with his wife, Dr. Patricia Berchtold, and husband-and-wife veterinarians Dr. Mark Engelhardt and Dr. Patricia Hart.
According to Ramseyer, the open house will include tours of the facility, as well as explanations of the types of surgery the doctors can perform on-site. There will be refreshments and a free raffle for baskets of pet supplies.
Chelmsford Animal Hospital was owned for 42 years by Dr. Martin Gruber, who retired in 2005 after selling the business to the foursome, three of whom had worked together at the Animal Hospital of Nashua.
The new owners soon realized they needed more room.
"We tried to keep the building small and warm and fuzzy and homey," Ramseyer said. "It's not a huge Taj Mahal, but we do have enough room now to do what we need to do."
He said the five doctors on staff, which also includes Dr. Claire Thomas and Dr. Jennifer Cushing, can handle most pet ailments and injuries, but a surgeon
