Diabetes

What is Diabetes?

There are two forms of diabetes in dogs: diabetes insipidus, also known as “drinking diabetes,” and diabetes mellitus, also known as “sugar diabetes.”

Diabetes mellitus is a medical condition resulting in an excessive amount of glucose or sugar in the blood. This is caused by a deficiency of insulin, which is a hormone secreted by the pancreas.

Diabetes insipidus is a very rare disorder that results in failure to regulate body water content.

Diabetes mellitus is more common in dogs, and is frequently diagnosed in dogs 5 years old or older.

Diabetes mellitus affects an estimated one in four hundred cats, and is seen more frequently in middle to old age cats. It is also more common in males than females.

What are symptoms of Diabetes?

  • Weight-loss, often despite an increased appetite
  • Excessive thirst and urination
  • Pungent breath with a chemical smell
  • Increased or decreased appetite
  • Cataracts
  • Lack of energy

Treatment for Diabetes

Once your pet has been tested for, and diagnosed with diabetes, your veterinarian will likely start your pet on insulin injections. Regular blood glucose testing is also necessary for treatment. In some cases, your pet may be prescribed a special food for diabetic pets.
